The Deltabox chassis was designed and developed by Yamaha's team of engineers for use in their racing motorcycles in the WorldGP series. It was first introduced in 1982 and made its debut on the TZR250 racing bike in 1985. The Deltabox structure is a small-sized innovation that supports larger engines, providing excellent performance and durability. It has since been incorporated into Yamaha's production motorcycles.

The Deltabox framework is primarily used in motorcycles with engine displacements exceeding 250cc, emphasizing smooth handling. It has been implemented in Yamaha models ranging from the MT-03 and YZF-R3 to larger models like the MT-10 and YZF-R1. Additionally, it serves as the main structure for Yamaha's Sport Heritage lineup, including the XSR700 and XSR900.

The Yamaha XSR900 DB40 Prototype was built to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Deltabox chassis design. It showcases a Cafe Racer-style that suits the Goodwood event and aligns with the "XSR GP" trademark registered by the company last year. Most of the major components of the DB40, including the fuel tank, are directly taken from the XSR900. The single-seat tail section is derived from the Cafe Racer accessory kit, inspired by the original TZR250 model that introduced the Deltabox frame in the 1980s.

If the "XSR GP" name is used for production and commercial purposes as the company has trademarked, it is expected that the actual production model will closely resemble the DB40. However, it is speculated that the production version might be linked to the YZF-R9, potentially based on the modified platform of the MT-09, similar to what was done with the YZF-R7. Overall, the upcoming YZF-R9 is expected to be more modern and incorporate elements from the R-Series, distinguishing it from the DB40 or XSR GP models.
